As parents, this time of year we often think about the school year ahead: “Will my child make friends? Will they keep up in math? Will they be happy at drop-off? Which extracurriculars should we choose?”
These are important, immediate questions! But have you paused lately to picture your children at age 18, 25, or 40, and wonder what kind of foundation you are building for that future adult? At St. Mark Ministries, we are committed not only to educating children but also to supporting families as they raise those children to be Christian adults.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” – Proverbs 22:6
The benefits of a Christian education aren't confined to report cards or a single school year. They compound over decades! Even national research has explored and confirmed this fact. Let’s talk about it.
A Faith Foundation That Anchors Adulthood
At St. Mark, we believe parents are the number one influence in their children's faith lives. Our role is not to replace that influence, but to partner with it, reinforcing at school and church what is being lived out at home.
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4
Research also supports this: The Cardus Education Survey, a nationally representative study tracking thousands of adult graduates across five different school sectors, has found that graduates of Protestant Christian schools consistently report higher levels of religious engagement than their peers from public, Catholic, or non-religious independent schools.
According to the report, this includes a stronger belief in God and life after death, more regular practices like prayer and Bible reading, and a greater sense of experiencing God's presence in daily life. Christian school graduates also give more to charity and volunteer more often, regardless of income level. And these patterns have held steady since the survey began in 2011.
“From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” – 2 Timothy 3:15
The spiritual impact of a Christian education is not a short-term effect that fades after graduation. It lasts for a lifetime!
Character-Building That Lasts a Lifetime
A Christian education also shapes how students treat others. Sue Heimerl, whose family has been part of St. Mark for two decades, has watched this play out in her own children's lives.
“St. Mark sets kids up for success by instilling in them a servant heart through the community-minded things that we do,” she shared. “It sets them up for what they might want to do down the road.”
Two of her older children are now pursuing service-minded careers – a direct thread, she believes, back to the community service culture they grew up in at St. Mark!
Academic Preparation That Extends Beyond Graduation
Some parents wonder whether a Christian school can offer the same academic rigor as other options. The research – and the experience of St. Mark families – proves that they don't have to choose!
The same Cardus Education Survey found that graduates of Protestant Christian schools report feeling better prepared for college and career than their public school peers and earn bachelor's degrees at slightly higher rates.
Christian schools like ours, in other words, are not choosing between faith and academic excellence. They are pursuing both.
At St. Mark Lutheran School, this looks like:
Small class sizes (13:1 student-to-teacher ratio)
Single-grade classrooms from kindergarten through 8th grade
Student Services support for children who need extra help or an extra challenge
Daily instruction rooted in a Biblical world view across every subject
Qualified, dedicated teachers with a heart for Christian education
Hands-on learning experiences, from science experiments to field trips
Elective courses that let students explore interests beyond the core curriculum
A proven track record of preparing students for high school and beyond
St. Mark students first have a chance to put their education to the test when they get to high school. When we asked recent alumni, “How do you feel about the way St. Mark prepared you for high school?” responses included:
“I think it helped me build relationships with my friends and teachers. I feel well prepared. I for sure have the knowledge and skills needed to be successful.”
“I feel like I am ready. I can take notes, and meet deadlines, and study.”
“[My teacher] has deadlines and helps us to be responsible with our work and teaches us good time management.”
“Yes, I feel prepared. In some of the classes, we have to take notes instead of it being all written out. We have to be creative and discover things for ourselves.”
“It prepared me well enough that I will know what to do and how to study when classes get harder.”
Finding Community and a Sense of Belonging
Perhaps the most surprising benefit of a Christian education is not what happens in the classroom, but what happens long after a child walks out of it for the last time.
Sue Heimerl experienced this in one of the hardest seasons of her life. When her mother passed away a few years ago, St. Mark's staff showed up in a way she will never forget: “The way the teachers reached out, the way they supported our kids, the way they supported our family, was just incredible. We had a number of teachers and people from St. Mark's staff come to my mom's visitation.”
This kind of lasting community is not something every Christian school achieves easily. National research on Christian school graduates has identified “belonging and peer relationships” as an area where the sector, as a whole, has room to grow.
But at St. Mark, our families consistently describe the opposite experience. As Luke Hockers put it, “We feel like we're a part of St. Mark. We don't just send them to school. We're a part of the school.”
We work intentionally to build and protect that sense of belonging through inter-class activities like the Chapel Buddies program, family-oriented events like Breakfast with Dads, and a school culture that prioritizes healthy relationships between peers, students and teachers, and the school and families overall.
What This Means for Your Family
Faith, character, academics, and community are not four separate boxes to check on a school tour. They are four compounding investments that build on each other, year after year, long after your child has grown up and moved on.
Only the Holy Spirit can work faith in hearts. But a Christ-centered education provides many opportunities for that faith to take root and grow.
Now, we would love for your family to experience the St. Mark difference for yourselves. Schedule a tour today or call our school office with any questions!
